Hello, I'm Maria
let's get to know each other
I'm a Derbyshire photographer, NICU nurse and mum to my little girl, Olive.
Nursing shaped a lot of who I am. It's taught me patience, empathy and how to make people feel at ease in situations where they really don't know what to expect. Photography felt like a natural extension of that ~ a way to tell stories and hold onto moments that would otherwise just disappear.
I started Shots by Maz because I wanted to do more than take nice pictures. I wanted families to have something to go back to. Something that actually looks and feels like their life, not a polished version of it.
Becoming a mum to Olive changed how I see everything I photograph. You notice things differently when you know how quickly it all moves. That perspective comes with me to every session.
I put a lot of thought into making the experience feel good, not just the end result. From the planning conversations beforehand to the moment we wrap up, I want you to leave feeling like it was easy and enjoyable ~ because it should be!

My approach

I always try to capture the real parts of your life. Not the staged or perfect version but the way things actually are. Like when your kids are running around in the garden or when you’re just quietly soaking in those first few days with a newborn on the sofa. That's what I love to photograph.
I don't do the whole "look at me and smile" thing for an hour. Instead I might ask you to go for a walk or just sit together and talk. I’ll be there catching the little things like your hand on your child's shoulder or the way you laugh when things get a bit messy. It’s those tiny details that really show who you are.
My time as a NICU nurse taught me so much about being gentle and patient. I’ve spent years looking after the tiniest babies so I’m very used to staying calm and making sure everyone feels safe and comfortable. I just want to give you photos that feel warm and honest and remind you of exactly how much you love your people.

In 2025, I was placed in the Top 50 of the Small Business Awards for Best Creative Arts and in 2026 I was selected as a finalist in the local Lots for Tots Awards. Being recognised within both the industry and my local community means so much ~ especially as my business has always been built on connection and word of mouth.
